The Key Traits of a Successful Student Mentor

Mary E. Streshly is a part-time faculty member with San Francisco State University. She teaches the course Policy, Law, and the Political Economy of Education as part of the college’s educational leadership doctoral program. Mary Streshly is also active in her local community and is now a board member with Bay Area Gardeners Scholarship Foundation (BAGSF). She serves as a mentor to BAGSF scholarship students.

Effective mentors must have a willingness to share every aspect of their life experience to serve their mentees. In addition to offering their knowledge and expertise, including any proprietary knowledge that might influence their mentee’s success, a mentor must also be transparent about their failings. This allows them to steer mentees away from the situations that could lead to them experiencing similar failures.

Mentors must also feel invested in the act of mentoring. Few mentors receive payment for their work, meaning they obtain fulfillment from the act of investing their time and energy into other people. The best mentors also recognize that they may not see the immediate effects of their efforts. As such, they commit to helping others over the long term, rather than expecting quick change.

Finally, effective mentors are as open and honest with their feedback as they are when sharing their experiences and knowledge. Mentees often require feedback or criticism to steer them in the right direction. A good mentor does not shy away from delivering this feedback. However, they do so in a constructive way to help their mentees see what they might be doing wrong and what they can do to correct it.
