Why Nature Conservation Is Important

An experienced academic administrator with a doctorate in educational leadership, Mary E. Streshly serves as the executive director of educational services at the San Mateo County Office of Education. In July 2022, Mary Streshly was selected by former California governor Jerry Brown to serve as senior advisor and acting executive director of Oakland Military Institute College Preparatory Academy, a position she still holds. Outside of work, Mary Streshly pursues interests such as nature conservation.

Nature conservation involves activities that seek to prevent the loss of species and the destruction of the ecosystem. It is critical for the survival of humans, wildlife, and vegetation. Conservation is also important to healthy air and water quality and biodiversity.

Air quality impacts all the facets of human life – socially, economically, and environmentally. Socially, nature conservation minimizes the circulation of contaminated air that may lead to lung diseases. Economically, it prevents healthcare costs, prevents erosion, and boosts tourism. Environmentally, nature conservation preserves water quality and protects aquatic life.

Water quality is adversely affected when large portions of land become paved surfaces or covered with buildings. When it rains, rainwater from these buildings and paved areas is carried to waterways since there is no soil to absorb rainwater. They mix with dirt, oil, fertilizers, and other chemicals until they reach the streams and the ocean, putting water quality at risk.

Biodiversity encompasses the diversity of life where varying species are interconnected. Disrupting this interconnection may lead to extinction. Experts say that the present rate of species extinction across the globe is between 1,000 and 10,000 times faster than when biodiversity is undisturbed. Ecosystem services around the world are used unsustainably by up to 60 percent. If this trend continues because of the absence of nature conservation, the ecosystem continuously diminishes and may threaten the existence of life on Earth, including that of humans.
