A part-time faculty member of the educational leadership doctoral program at the San Francisco State University, Mary E. Streshly teaches the policy, law and the political economy of education course. She loves wine tasting, hiking, kayaking, bird watching, and gardening. The latter stoked interest in the nearby associations, leading to Mary Streshly’s appointment to the Bay Area Gardeners Scholarship Foundation (BAGSF) board of directors.
Founded in 2003 by Catalino Tapia and his son, BAGSF endeavors to nurture and uplift academically diverse students in the bay area through various activities, including public discussions, forums, panels, and workshops. To qualify, the candidate must live in one of the three-bay area counties, exhibit a lack of financial capability through tax returns and credit stubs, proof of college enrollment, and be the first to attend college in the family, among other requirements.
Other than education funding, the foundation offers several self-esteem classes, aiming to assist the student in regaining pride and spirit. As of 2022, the scholarship amount totaled $2000, plus a Chromebook, with an additional $1000 for candidates whose parents or guardians are gardeners.
